Nine tenths of native stablecoin activity is now one token

Native African stablecoins moved $2.87M last week. cNGN was $2.58M of it — 89.7% — and the only one that grew. Outside it, weekly percentage changes are being driven by single transfers, not by activity.

Native African stablecoins moved $2,872,838 in transfer volume last week, down 19.4% from the week before.

cNGN was $2,575,796 of that — 89.7%. It was also the only token that grew, up 19.3% across 13,855 transfers. Every other native stablecoin we track fell, several of them by more than 90%.

The obvious read is that everything except cNGN is collapsing. We do not think that is what the data shows, and the reason matters more than the headline.

Percentages need a base to be meaningful

Across the non-cNGN tokens, daily transaction counts held steady all fortnight — between 159 and 809 a day, with no trend. Over the same fourteen days, their combined daily dollar volume ranged from $131 to $953,855.

Activity was flat. Value swung by four orders of magnitude.

That is the signature of a handful of large transfers landing on a very thin base. One $900k transfer on 20 July is most of why the prior week looks strong; its absence is most of why last week looks like a collapse. cZAR "falling 94%" is a description of one transfer not repeating, not of users leaving.

So we would not report those percentages as trends, and we would be sceptical of anyone who does.

The finding is the concentration itself

What is durable is the shape. Seven tokens across four currencies moved $297,042 combined last week — roughly a ninth of what one token did.

For everything outside cNGN, the honest position is that weekly change is not yet a meaningful measure. The base is small enough that a single treasury movement, a single market-maker rebalance, or a single large user can dominate a week entirely. Reporting a percentage implies a population that does not exist yet.

This is not a claim that those tokens are failing. nTZS launched weeks ago; cGHS and eXOF operate in markets where on-chain settlement is still early. It is a claim about what can and cannot be measured at this size — and a reason to watch transaction counts alongside volume, because they are currently telling a steadier story than the dollars are.

cNGN has crossed the threshold where weekly volume means something. Nothing else has.

Method

Transfer volume in USD for native African stablecoins tracked by AfriFlux, aggregated over the ISO week of 27 July – 2 August 2026 and compared with the preceding ISO week. Transfers only — mints and burns are supply operations, not user activity, and are excluded. Daily transaction counts are taken from the same series and are used here to distinguish a change in activity from a change in transfer size.
