The Gradient: total volume hides who's actually winning

The #2 venue by lifetime volume processed just $2.9M last quarter. A same-sized rival moved $23M — eight times more. Lifetime volume measures scale; it does not measure momentum. The Gradient measures both.

The biggest African stablecoin venues aren't necessarily the ones winning anymore.

The #2 venue by lifetime volume processed just $2.9M last quarter. A similarly sized venue processed $23M — eight times more.

Lifetime volume measures scale. It doesn't measure momentum.

Title card for The Gradient: total volume hides who's actually winning. The #2 venue by lifetime volume moved just $2.9M last quarter while a same-sized rival moved $23M — eight times more.

Two axes, four markets

Total volume tells you who won yesterday. Momentum tells you who's winning today.

So we plotted every venue on two axes — scale, meaning lifetime retail volume, and momentum, meaning recent activity as a share of that lifetime. The result wasn't one leaderboard. It was four completely different markets: large and rising, mature and coasting, small and rising, and quiet.

A scatter plot of every venue with scale on the horizontal axis and momentum on the vertical. Breet and Spenda sit high and right in the large-and-rising quadrant, Chipper sits bottom-right as mature and coasting, and Noblocks and Bayse sit top-left as small but rising.

Same size, opposite direction

Take Chipper Cash and Spenda. Both have processed roughly $60M over their lifetime. Ranked by total volume, they'd sit side by side.

But last quarter: Chipper $2.9M, down 19%. Spenda $23.2M, up 34%.

Same history. Completely different trajectory. That's the difference between measuring size and measuring momentum.

Two venues of the same size compared side by side. Chipper Cash: $2.9M last quarter, $63.9M lifetime, −19% quarter on quarter, recent over lifetime 4%. Spenda: $23.2M last quarter, $60.5M lifetime, +34% quarter on quarter, recent over lifetime 38% — an eight-fold gap.

We built the Gradient to measure momentum, not just size — every venue, every quarter, updated from on-chain data. Stop making decisions from yesterday's leaderboard.

Method

Scale is lifetime attributed retail stablecoin volume per venue. Momentum is the most recent complete quarter divided by lifetime volume, computed for Q2 2026. Both are derived from the same on-chain attribution that produces the venue pages; tiny-venue spikes are discounted below $5M lifetime so a small base cannot manufacture momentum. This is a ratio, not a forecast.
